Hearing loss is a top modifiable risk factor for dementia, with studies showing that mild, moderate, and severe untreated hearing loss can increase dementia risk by 2x, 3x, and 5x, respectively. It contributes to dementia through three main mechanisms: cognitive load (brain strain), social isolation, and accelerated brain atrophy.
